My kids are starting to game and they have an assortment of dice, but when I saw this I thought it would provide dice for their friends when playing, and they could each pick a set they liked for themselves. I wasn't really concerned about the bag (which some reviews have knocked) and the selection sounded good.
The dice were an immediate hit. One picked the dark red set, dubbing it the "diablo dice" and the other picked the white set, calling it the "heaven dice". But the picking was difficult. "I've got it down to these two sets" said one, then later, "I've got it down to these two sets." When I pointed out that it had previously been narrowed down to two sets the reply was, "but these are two different sets." Gorgeous dice.
Because other reviewers had picked on the dice bag I had no expectations there, but it is a nice dice bag. No, it isn't a $50 bag. No, it won't survive being used as a flail. But it has cavernous space and can comfortably hold seventeen of the sets. It looks nice and is reasonably well made.
Naturally, the first thing we did (after dice selection) was get down to gaming. And, with the claims of "imbalanced" and "unfair" dice it should come as no surprise that a string of 1's were rolled on 1d20. Except, that player was using their prior dice set. I mean seriously, I've been gaming for forty years and I've learned that dice are random and gamers are superstitious. I've seen incredibly unlikely strings of rolls, but if you understand the statistics of rolling you know that such things aren't as uncommon as they may seem. (There are *many* of those "unlikely" strings -- game long enough and you will likely, though not certainly, see some -- heck, I've had a d6 land on a corner and sit there, stable. I don't even know how to calculate how unlikely that is.)
But perhaps more to the point with respect to "fair" dice -- a long time ago I bought some "Character Builder" dice. It was a set of three six sided dice made of wood with a lead plug on the one's face. It is hard to conceive of a more unfair die. The impression when rolling them is that they always roll 6's, but I was curious and so rolled them a thousand times to get reasonable statistics. Two through five were slightly less common than 1:6 and the six was only about 2:6. The odds of rolling a 1 were still not that bad, around 1:12. And those dice were a hoot. They'd spin around the one face, flip back from rolling another face to land with six up, and so on. And that's all such a massively imbalanced die can achieve. These dice will not have a perfect distribution: no dice does. But you'd be hard pressed to measure it accurately and -- seriously -- they are for gaming.
These dice are fine. They are very pretty. They are very reasonably priced. And you get a dice bag thrown in that can hold most of them.
