5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the haters this game is amazing and immersive

The developers of this game also developed Vampyr and they do one thing extremely well and that is story telling and immersion. From the start this game pulls you in to its world and characters with exceptional voice acting and detail. It's dark and will remind you of movies like Sleepy Hollow or From Hell. Visuals are very crisp and detailed and very immersive because of the dark atmosphere and creepy town you explore.

Great story, fantastic graphics, and fun metroidvania feel. Plays like the latest God of War, but that's a good thing. There were just a few wonky camera spots, and some things weren't exactly explained (man I miss instruction books), but overall it's a great game. Play BOTH good choices and bad, nice contrast in the stories and worth the second playthrough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Immersive Action RPG

60 hours of gameplay on Hard Difficulty

To make a long story short, I needed something to hold me over until Dragon’s Dogma 2 released (if you know, you know). I had heard about this game in the past and remembered liking how the gameplay looked. Little did I know, it would end up being one of the better games I’ve played in quite some time.

Is the combat as generic as it seems?
I honestly don’t need a lot when it comes to combat. Give me a light, heavy, and charged heavy attack and I’m golden! Banishers has all three and more. Yes, it feels a bit janky, and this only becomes a problem during some of the optional combat challenges where you’ll need to deal with a lot of tough enemies at once.

    Is it a “scary” game?
Ghosts and demons might be the theme, but this isn’t a scary game in the sense of jump scares. The boss you encounter at the beginning of the game made me a bit uncomfortable in an exorcist sort of way, but that's the scariest it got. Expect a typical action RPG.

Are you forced to play as both characters?
I was sort of concerned about being forced to play as two characters because this typically doesn’t go well for me. I’m relieved to say this wasn’t a problem in Banishers. As for being “forced” to play as Antea? That’ll only happen for a few seconds when you need her to solve a quick environmental puzzle, but you can switch right back to Red shortly after. During combat, a simple button press toggles you back and forth between the two, but you’re not obligated to do so.

    Is there decent enemy variety?
I don’t care nearly as much about enemy variety as I used to — especially in a narrative-focused game like Banishers. Heck, there are maybe 4 or 5 different basic enemy types throughout the game. The good news is the bosses are varied. More good news is there are not a ton of enemy encounters, so they’ll never feel “stale”.

Are the comparisons to God of War and Witcher 3 accurate?
I read/heard these comparisons going in, but thankfully I took them with a grain of salt. Sure, you can see the inspiration if you kind of squint and tilt your head to the side. I’d say it’s more Witcher 3 than GoW due to the narrative and some of the side missions. Just don’t go in expecting it to be as good as those games and you’ll be fine.

    Is the story immersive?
I’m typically not a story guy, but boy was I into this one! I was hooked from the very beginning and I cared about what happened to the characters (a rarity for me). I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say the story is reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials. If you know, you know ????

I love it when a game surprises me. I doubt if this will get any GOTY nominations, but it’s one of the better games I’ve played in a while. I’m hoping there’s a sequel where they can keep building upon what they learned. Dragon’s Dogma 2; you’re up next.

Here's my very short mini-review from social media:

    ------------

Banishers is Don't Nod's biggest, most ambitious game yet. I've clocked almost 80 hours already. Granted, I played it on Hard mode (the 4th of 5 settings) because I hit a wall with Very Hard and found Normal too easy. Also, I'm trying to do all the side quests and get all trophies (with a partial replay for the other ending trophy up next), so a single beeline through the story on an easier setting would go way faster.

Still, the scope and content here rivals games in the AAA space, with an open-ish world set in the American colonies at the end of the 17th century, where ghosts are real and everybody knows it. Aside from sometimes-finicky combat (I try to heal or dodge, but Red is busy stumbling around like an idiot from the last hit he took) I really vibe with this game.

    ------------

I hope people don't sleep on this game. It deserves way more attention than it's getting. But with more high-profile games out now and coming up, and I can see that very thing happening. There's really something cool and unique here with Banishers, and I recommend it if you like games by Spiders (ex: GreedFall) or Piranha Bytes (ex: Elex) or are a fan of AA games that look and feel like AAA, or if you're a fan of Don't Nod's eclectic body of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good

I really enjoy this game a bunch. The story is engaging and the fighting is really fun. Yeah, it's supposed to be a ghost/somewhat creepy kind of game but really it's not that spooky. Graphics are pretty good. My favorite part of the game is the mini-mysteries you stumble along in the game and doing missions to discover why the ghost is haunting. I haven't finished the game yet. After being thoroughly disgusted by FF7 Rebirth and getting bored with FF Stranger of Paradise it's nice to find a game I actually look forward to when firing up my gaming system instead of wondering how the game was going to get me upset or wondering...when will it end.

Item was received as advertised . Very interesting and above average storyline . Graphics were great during cutscenes and average during gameplay. Gameplay itself felt below average , slow , and clunky. Huge boss battles but boring combat and pointless loot gathering in between. I would recommend waiting for a sale to purchase this game.
