5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic reinvention of a classic design, and a great all-in-one solution for multiple devices
Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2019
I love this controller. I was psyched to buy this controller for two reasons: 1) because it looks like a Super Nintendo controller, which is one of my favorite designs for retro gaming, and 2) because it looked like a great all-in-one controller that could work with a variety of devices. First I'd like to discuss the design and then I'll discuss how it works with all of my devices, but if you're looking for a quick review: it's a great controller that plays nice with all of my devices, and it feels great to use.

The controller is pretty comfortable and all the buttons are surprisingly easy to reach. I'm going to be comparing it to a Super Nintendo controller from this point on, as that's clearly what it it takes it's design cues from. It's angled in a way that makes it slightly more ergonomic than the SNES controller, which makes the added buttons and joysticks feel pretty natural. The buttons and D-pad are a lot clicky-er than an SNES controller, which might be good or bad depending on your preferences. I liked the clicky buttons and pad in theory, but when playing, they're definitely a little rougher on the hands than the squishier buttons on a worn-in pad. Time and extended use may change that, though.

The build-quality is fantastic. This feels like a premium controller, from the plastic used on the body to the rubber of the joysticks, evertyhing looks great. The gyro-aiming works phenomenally on the Nintendo Switch, and the vibration is great. I love the new, more original design of the SN30 Pros, they look very premium.

The only downside of the design is one I can't really fault the SN30 Pro for: the joysticks, while perfectly usable, are a bit awkward to use on a design that was never meant to have joysticks. It doesn't bother me because I purchased this controller with the mentality of: I'm mostly using this controller for 2D games that use the D-pad, and having the joysticks for 3D games is just a bonus. And the joysticks are comfortable and responsive, so with that mindset, I'm very happy with them. It's a bit awkward, but very usable.

Here's a list of the devices I wanted to be able to use this controller with: Nintendo Switch, Mac, Windows PC (dual-booting in Bootcamp), and with my NES and SNES Classic using the 8Bitdo Retro Receiver. That's 4/5 devices that this controller had to work well with, which is asking a lot of one controller.

To get to the point: this controller works great with all of them. Pairing between devices is quick and fluid, or at least as quick as each individual device will allow. It even includes a handy list of shortcuts to set the controller to pair to each device on the back. I recently begun using it as my primary controller in Windows and I fell in love again with how fluidly everything worked. Windows detects the controller as an Xbox controller, so you'll have to mentally re-map the buttons in your head on the fly, but I got used to it pretty quick.

This controller exceeded all of the expectations I had for it. It's a great little device that feels good to use and plays nice with all of my devices. The only flaws it has are things that are just inherent to it's design, and I think it's a fair compromise to have such a fantastic reinterpretation of a retro classic. 8bitdo knocked it out of the park.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous green and funtional for small hands!
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024
TL;DR: if you are condsidering it for small-handed individuals buy it. If you want a solid controller that is compact buy this, or the lite2. If you don't care about either of those, consider the sn30pro2.
It's 8-bitdo. They are one of the BEST after market game controller makers. This is no exception. It's not my favorite one of the bunch, but none of them have this gorgeous clear green casing! The buttons feel good, though the d-pad feels a bit...clunky; It doesnt feel that way on the sn30pro. The value is great though. I like that I can use it on the switch, computer, and phone. Knowing which button to hold for each can be a bit difficult though, if you don't rotate through them often. Get this for the compact size, quality, value, and the color. If you just want quality, get the new pro2 or the ultimate.

Also, this is a 2-fold product for me. #1 the color; #2 my 8 year old can hold it comfortably.
You see I have 2 kids. My daughter is 12. She has the blue lite2 and loves it. She does NOT want her 8yo brother using it. Sadly, my sn30pro is too big for hands hands. So I wanted to try this for him and it's perfect! Now we all have our controllers! And yes, When they are in bed, I use this green on becuase I love looking at it. They need all of their different controllers to have this case option!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Computer/Nintendo Switch Controller
Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2018
I bought this 8BitDo controller to use primarily on the computer, but I did see it also worked on the Nintendo Switch, which was a great addition for use. I picked the one that resembled the old SNS controller as that was easily a favorite controller of mine back in the 90's. I have the original SNS wired controllers and used that for comparison, and to me all buttons seem to function very similarly, The plastic seems a bit different but not sure if it is better or worse, just different, I did mark on star off for material as I was not sure if it is good or bad. This controller feels the same in my hands as the original, so the feel and grip is about on par with the original SNS controller.

I do not have a mac and no longer have an android device so I could not test it on those, so reviews of it working on those devices would need to be written by someone who has used it on those.

Game Play:
I used it on several Nintendo Switch games as well as some of the classic Namco games on the Switch all of which worked well with no controller lag. I used it for Minecraft on the Switch and the Windows 10 version and both worked exactly the same with no issues. I have also used it for playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 on the computer with flawless operation. If there is any lag due to it being a wireless controller, I did not notice one bit.

Battery Life:
The charge life is better than the charge life on my Switch Pro controller. I cannot say for certain the exact time difference, I just know that my son needed to charge the pro controller while I was continuing on with this one and both had come off a fresh charge just before use and both with the same amount of play time as well. I did not play straight through as I do not play games 24 hours straight, so it was over several days of testing so, even at rest there seemed to be minimal battery drain.

Suggested Improvements:
My main complaint is something I knew going in and that is it will not work on IOS devices, there is a possible change to the device that is basically a downgrade you could get on it to make it work but why would I want to downgrade this if it works great on all other platforms I have tried it on. So my suggested improvement would be a new update that would not be a downgrade but instead would be an upgrade to have it work on IOS devices. There are so many games that I would love to use this on that I have on IOS. I do not want to by a controller that is specific to those devices when I have this controller that I would love to use on them.

Overall:
Overall the controller was better than I expected. I had heard of 8BitDo for some time now, but I figured it was all hype and that the end product would be very cheap, but it does not feel that way at all. This feels like a mainstream product that even has the coloring right to the original SNS controllers. Some people might not like the ergonomics of the controller, but if you do like that nostalgic feel of an SNS controller while playing newer games, this controller will not let you down.
