5.0 out of 5 stars The Premier MMORPG With a True Multiplayer Focus
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021
Yes, it’s been a tough launch, but New World is a great game. And, no doubt, the launch issues will be sorted.

What makes New World the premier MMORPG is its return to true massively multiplayer gameplay, meaning a heavy focus on GROUP activity. Single-player games cater to individual fantasies. By definition, you cannot be more than you are in an online game. No matter how good a gamer you are, there is always someone better. New World is no hero game, nor is it meant to be. You are not the chosen one. The game’s core satisfaction lay in collective activity which can be deeply involving and satisfying.

In New World, the gameplay is the focus. Combat is physics-based and feels very good. The crafting system is the most extensive for an MMORPG since Ultima Online. Systems are complex, deep, yet accessible. The game world is rich and the art direction is first-rate. Sound engineering and sound environment are immersive and employ doppler effects. You thus don’t simply hear someone chopping down a tree. You get a sense of where they’re doing it. Ambient sounds are keenly realistic. You have a genuine feel for the environment you’re in.

Combat systems – weapons and skills – are extensive and can encompass myriad play styles and roles. Every choice you make, be it the weapon attributes you gain as your character progresses, your choice of armor type, the approach you take to combat, all involve a fine balance of strengths and weaknesses. There is no ideal build or setup. Rather there are many viable ones that suit a wide variety of players.

If combat isn’t your thing, the crafting system is so extensive you can serve your group by crafting alone. Oddly, even the gathering of resources needed for crafting feels satisfying. The system is so good that PvE is optional, not required. You don’t NEED to farm certain PvE areas to get the gear you need, nor do you need to play the same PvE content over and over. PvE is a choice if that’s what you enjoy.

Where New World truly shines, however, is in its large-scale battles with as many as 100 players (50v50) engaged in an single battle, with objectives and a time limit. Further, battles have consequences. This is not some vast PvP arena with random battles that are ultimately meaningless and seem to go on forever. There are smaller-scale battles too if you choose. Plus there’s plenty of open-world PvP with unpredictable encounters that set up the big fights.

For those who enjoy housing, there is a variety of decorative options that also include housing items that give your character buffs.

Unlike most contemporary online games, New World has a thoughtful social design. Not only does success require collective activity, it offers multiple roles for players of various skill levels. Thus, you not only need to recruit players but you also need to retain them. This creates a more welcoming environment than folks normally associate with online games and video gamers.

Now for the downsides.

New World is not a AAA game, meaning it doesn’t have elaborate character creation. You have two body types – generic male and female – which you cannot make adjustments to. You customize based on set facial types, hair, skin color, skin markings and such. Faces are expressionless. Nonethless you can make your character look distinctive given the significant array of clothing styles, and skins for both clothing and weapons.

There are no towering orchestral music scores or elaborate cut scenes, famed voice actors, or full motion capture animations.

The biggest downside is the server architecture. There is no sole regional megaserver for the game. Rather there are myriad server clusters in many locations around the world. It made today’s launch hell due to the overwhelming response to the game.

This will limit international gameplay or even gameplay across time zones as well. However, this also means that most players can find servers with low ping and good performance.

The game lore is not compelling. Rather it’s more a standard good versus evil affair with no real nuance. There is no attempt at getting players to bond with NPCs in a rich story. New World thus evokes an earlier tradition in MMOs where the narrative is told by the audience, not the developers.

No mounts. There are plenty of fast travel options but you do a lot of walking or running in New World.

Finally, as noted, New World is built around collective action by groups. If you are, at heart, a solo player or if you have the social skills of a snow leopard, this is NOT the game for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Multiple Fatal Design Decisions Doom New World, 15 years behind WOW and Final Fantasy
Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2021
Starting on the positive, New World (NW) is a solid start for an MMO with high production values and a combat system that while simple, I found compelling. Another positive call-out for New World is the development process that significantly changed the game from what started out as a "Rust" or "ARK" brutal survivalist game that historically has only appealed to the most hard core of person vs person (PVP) gamers but has changed to a more appealing questing / person vs. environment (PVE) game with optional PVP content. I personally find the gathering data in Alpha and Beta testing a major innovation that hopefully other developers will adopt.

Unfortunately, the potential for the game was lost in one of if not the worst MMO launches that I have participated in my 17 years of playing MMOs including a 16 year uninterrupted subscriber to World of Worldcraft. Borrowing from the Princess Bride movie, some of the design choices where "inconceivable". These design mistakes resulted in a patently unplayable game and I literally mean unplayable with queue times that theoretically spanned days or even weeks. The queue times were actually truly theoretical because there were repeated server restarts or other technical issues that logged players out of the queues even if they were willing to wait days or weeks.

The tragedy of this unprecedented customer experience during launch was in my opinion directly the result of tragically bad design choices I have listed below.

1) Unique World Wide Character Names vs. Server Specific Character Names: The decision to not allow players to use a character name on an individual server vs. allowing only one character in the world to use a character name directly resulted in a horrible customer experience. This decision resulted in players that have spent years or even decades developing friends and an online profile online from being denied a chance to assume their character name. The result was that with the staggered launch instead of the normal simultaneous world wide launch combined with regional geofencing by IP address, the world crashed the first EU servers to reserve their names on a world wide basis. The part that is most troubling is that their is no solid technical or more importantly improved customer experience reason for this world wide exclusive name decision. No other successful MMO has taken this design decision.

2) Server caps to only 2,000 concurrent users during launch combined with no cap on the number of characters that could be created on a server. This is in my opinion the biggest and possibly fatal design choice that resulted in the unprecedented week long launch queues for the most populated servers. First of all, the linear, "on rails" design of the game starting regions made some type of restriction required on the number of players for the game to be playable. Other MMO's have solved this problem by several means such as having multiple starting zones as the least sophisticated solution and using instance layers where players can be on the same server to play with their friends but be in multiple instances to solve the overpopulation problems. More important, these other successful MMO's also are rigorous in shutting down the character creation process when servers become overpopulated. New World took none of these steps. The design decision that was the most "inconceivable" was that in at least the first week that I played, there was no restriction on new character creation. How was this simple solution missed in all the extensive stress testing and alpha and beta tests? Has no one on the design team participated in a WOW or Final Fantasy expansion launch event?

3) No major innovation in MMO game play or compelling Intellectual Property. My first two design failure callouts in my opinion were the most troubling because they appeared to be easily preventable by simply making different design choices. This third issue is a much harder but equally important failing of the game - there was nothing new in game play. The MMO world is constantly evolving on two fronts, with the established successful franchises such as WOW and Final Fantasy providing innovation in multiple directions, albeit at times being more incremental that competitors. The other front are new MMO's that bring some type of innovation to game play. Another innovation includes new business models such as WOW private servers that take experiment with game play of an existing property. When you look past the potentially game killing launch mistakes, New World while a solid start for a new MMO, brought no new "wow" innovation. As I left from of the starting zones, the game quickly turned into another "go kill 50 of that" and "gather 40 of these items and 50 or those items". I found myself looking for something new at the end of the leveling grind to make the normal MMO tediousness worth it and I found nothing compelling. I talked to my friends and they similarly could not offer a "here are the three things that make grinding in New World worth it".

In summary, after playing New World and reflecting on the MMO genre in general, while I may appear overly critical, my feedback is meant to help the design team improve the game. MMO's are prohibitibly difficult to design because of many of the issues New World faced and the decades of learning competitors of New World have acquired. My hope is that the talented Amazon Games Studios team continues their process of gathering data from what worked and unfortunately failed in the launch to improve the game and provide myself and my friends with a viable MMO product. The vice president of Amazon Games Studios has been known to say that he prefers feedback that is bi-modal, either a 1 or a 5 star. Unfortunately, with the numerous un-forced errors in the launch of New World that resulted in such a frustrating customer experience, I can only justify a one star.
