5.0 out of 5 stars A great controller
Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2022
I have been using this controller to play the Metal Gear Solid saga on my PS3, and used it to play some fighting games on my PC.
It is a very good controller, but it has its quirks and may not be for everyone.
The D-Pad is quite good, not like Sony or Xbox Series good, but good overall. If you press on the borders to the right or the left while pressing down on the D-Pad, it detects a left-down or right-down push, and it is the same for every side, this is one of the quirks I mentioned before.
The analog sticks are very good, they have a good sensibility and are perfect for aiming and driving. (Tested on Gran Turismo 5)
One important thing to notice is the L2-R2 are very sensitive, and if you have heavy grip on a controller, you might get accidental presses on these only by resting your fingers on them, fortunately with my grip I do not have this problem.
It turns off after a bit of inactivity which helps save battery (this happened to me a lot during cutscenes in MGS) but syncing is INSTANT, you press the Home button and boom, you're playing and turning it off is also instant (which is much appreciated).
Compared to the DualShock3 and the Xbox Series X this controller is light, and some people might hold it and think it is a cheap controller, but the texture on the plastic is very premium and also has texture in it for better grip.
Battery duration is great, I still haven't had to charge it and I've been playing for hours with it (probably due to it turning itself off during cutscenes and saving battery)

For PlayStation fans, this is it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good controller, but not pressure sensitive triggers
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024
Retro fighters is an awesome company and this is a great product for a wireless controller for yous PS1/PS2/PS3. Has great ergonomics, great button feel, not super cheap feeling, accurate, etc.

Only downside for me is pressure sensitivity for the triggers. They are either on, or off like a button or switch. At least playing racing games like Tourist Trophy or GT4; if you have the controller mapped for acceleration and braking on the triggers, they will not react in an analog way. It will be full gas or full brake. Which makes it tough for racing games.

I not sure on the other buttons as far as pressure sensitivity, but all other games not needing something like that would work flawless; and will buy a couple more for multiplayer games.

In the meantime I might try the 8BITDO adapter to see if my PS3 controllers can do pressure sensitivity using that.

Overall, good controller just not pressure sensitive triggers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome.

This is awesome, the best ps2 controller you can buy. I have only used this with a PS2 and it works right out of the box on both PS2 and PS1 games.

There are two pieces of info that might help you out.
One, the d pad can give you diagonal directional input when you are trying to use a straight up, down, left or right input so you may get some incorrect tricks in a Tony Hawk game for instance. But once I realized what was happening, I put a little more thought into it and I was Fine

Two, the triggers are sensitive and easily engaged so be careful of your grip. If you're playing a fighting game were one of the triggers is a taunt like a wrestling game, you might get caught with a big move. But once again a little extra thought and you will be fine.

Absolutely recommend.

Cheers.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Value Controller
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2022
I have never been a fan of the standard OEM Playstation controllers. I don't like the way they fit my hands, I don't like the triggers, I don't like the side-by-side control sticks or the size of them. In all of these areas, the Defender is vastly superior. With a shape and ergonomic design much more akin to the Xbox One or Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers, I would take this controller over an OEM Playstation controller in a heartbeat.

However, there are some noticeable shortcomings. While the D-pad is nice and clicky, it feels rather stiff. Rolling my thumb around it, there are too many times it feels like it's sticking, though the input does seem to register.

The triggers are quite possibly the least satisfying I've ever felt, second only to an actual Playstation controller. My controller actually arrived with the battery mounted in such a way that I could not depress the right trigger all the way; I just removed the back plate with a Philips head screwdriver, scooched the battery over, and the trigger worked fine. But the triggers feel somewhat soft; that might be your thing, but it's not mine.

The bumpers are and face buttons are quite nice for the price point, I have no complaints there. But my biggest complaint is easily with the sticks.

I tested this controller with one of my most frequently payed games, Super Mega Baseball 3. The case may be different with another game, but I was miserable trying to play with these sticks. I didn't use any software to confirm this, but the dead zones seemed massive, and the left stick in particular felt painfully imprecise. In a game like baseball that requires great precision, I felt hopeless. After 3 hours of play, I switched to my 8BitDo Pro 2, which I received on the same day, and felt the difference in control immediately.

For me, I think a large influence was the design of the handles. The 8BitDo has much longer, slimmer grips, while the Defender is a but on the wider, stubbier side. I never quite felt comfortable holding the thing, and especially not using the side-by-side sticks.

This may have been a one-off, I'm not sure. But even as decent as the controller is, especially for $50, I'm inclined to return mine at this point. Still searching for the perfect alternative to Playstation's dogwater controllers.
