If your worry about bootlegs or scams, Hold up Heart gold or soul silver to a light and there should be a red tint on the outer edges of the cartridge, Typically the bootleg versions are lighter in color and have a gray outline with no red tint when put up to light, bootlegs also have no white outline in "HeartGold version"

As much as the 3DS is a very old handheld console, the game still runs just fine into the systems backwards compatibility! I tested it out with other pokemon games from the seller and they run as good as back in the day when I played them!

Hold: Up, B, and Select simultaneously. You will be asked if you want to delete the data. Select yes, and your data will be removed, allowing you to start a fresh new game. If you were using the pokewalker and had pokemon in it when you reset the game, the pokemon will still be inside.
