3.0 out of 5 stars Cool Tech, Difficult App
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024
I have to admit that I have had a tough time keeping up with the rate that tech has advanced and at first I was a little stumped by this device. I understand how it is supposed to work and what it does but it is a little more in depth than I was prepared for. The device itself is great. I love the customizable lighting and the fact that each screen can display different images or information. I also really like that I can add my own images. The overall design of the device is great and it looks right at home in my home office/gaming room (minus the orange feet, great feet, bad color.)

Now, while the device is great the app is NOT user friendly and honestly makes me feel a little dumb. It is not easy to negotiate and requires that I be able to figure out what all the non-standard icons mean. The options are limited without some type of programming knowledge. There are lots of widgets but none seem to apply to my needs. I was hoping to I would be able to track the events that spawn within the game that I play but I have not been able to find any that are capable of doing that. This kind of shocked me since the game is from a major maker and is played all over the world. It might be possible but trying to figure out how to do it has been time consuming and frustrating.

Because of the app this is basically acting as a cool clock and count down timer for Halloween, mostly because that was one of the only things I could figure out how to make it do without having hours to sit down and sort through the confusing app. So it is great tech that is unfortunately weighed down by poor tech support.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice gadget that works OK and has a few issues
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2024
    Good:
+ LEDs and general design are a cool aesthetic (with the exception of the orange feet, IMO).
+ Screens look really nice, and with some work you can really customize them. Animated GIFs look great, though that would be too distracting for me to leave on full-time, so I prefer the information widgets.
+ Most of the built-in widgets work well once you set them up. Weather and stock/crypto tracking are all good. The decibel meter is a nice feature (not sure if it's accurate, but it does respond to noise levels).
+ No issues with getting connected to WiFi and maintaining connection.

    Bad:
    - I don't really like that the feet and a few other pieces in the design are bright orange. While most of the device is gray or transparent, the orange is a noticeable color and sort of clashes a lot of other colors you might pick for the LEDs. Seems an odd design choice.
    - The app, while it works, can be buggy at times, with the device not picking up settings occasionally. Actually customizing the screens to what you want can end up being a chore.
    - Minor, but there's no battery, so if you unplug it from USB power it has to restart. Luckily it remembers everything and syncs up OK after.

Overall it's a neat gadget that you might find some fun or practical uses for. It didn't change my life and I probably wouldn't want to pay full price for it, but it's not a bad item if you like these types of devices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any desk
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2024
I absolutely love this DIVOOM Timesgate! It’s super easy to set up and get started. Downloading the app is a breeze and customization is endless! It looks so sleek and nice on my desk (don’t mind my dirty mousepad it’s getting changed soon). It also helps to have a nice little clock on my desk for when I have things full screen and can’t see the time. I can’t say enough how much I love the customization on this because you can upload your own images/videos to it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Privacy concern since app requires GPS location
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024
As you can see from the first picture this is a very cool illuminated device, and I was excited about receiving it. However it's not ready to do anything without help from its app. The instructions come in a very small book, compared in the picture to a mechanical pencil. Other than another page for controls, as in what buttons to press to turn it on or adjust brightness, there is a tiny, one-page, 3-step page with setup instructions. The first two printed steps both say to load the Divoom app onto an Apple or Android device. The third step says to Setup the WiFi, which is inside the app. There are absolutely no other instructions on how to use this device, except for those same two sparse pages in tiny print in many languages. So I looked around in the app.

As can be seen in the photo, when attempting to connect the device it says "please turn on GPS function to search and connect the device...". Full stop: Why does it need my location? I suppose if I wanted one of the little displays on the device to be a weather app, sure. But the cybersecurity threat potential here is that if the product knows your IP and street address are, and the app communicates that information back to the app vendor, then the vendor could publish and/or sell your information. I'm sorry, but that is just too much information to provide this device, and that risk is not acceptable to me.

This is too bad, because there is a built-in nixie tube clock app on board as shown in the picture with the reddish background that looks really cool; I tried to take a picture of it but the camera whites out the digits in the picture but you can see what they look like to the human eye by the reflection in the picture underneath the product. It's too bad one can't set the clock without the app, because at minimum I was hoping to use this product as a really cool-looking clock at minimum.

So I'm confronted with a dilemma: allow the device to collect my personal information and potentially sell it or report it to unknown parties, or simply don't trust it, and therefore don't use the product at all.

I'm sorry, but mandatory geolocation information is a showstopper for me, so I will not use this product.

Clunky and unintuitive. Works well enough with some apps and is okay for tracking crypto. Overall a desk piece that looks cool but is of little actual use. Expensive decor.
