5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Anki

Setting it up for Anki is a bit confusing, but there are a lot of tutorials out there. Once you set it up and get it working, it works seamlessly with Anki. Makes reviewing so much easier and saves a lot of time. Would highly recommend especially for pre-meds/med students using Anki for MCAT/boards!

5.0 out of 5 stars Game changer for Anki! READ FOR MORE INFO ON REASSIGNING KEYS.
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2023
Got this little tool to use when I'm going through hundreds of Anki cards. Sure, I could just sit there and press the keys on the keyboard, but this controller allows me to stand and stretch while I'm doing cards, which is always beneficial for someone like me who suffers from back pain.

If you're using it for Anki, you will have to remap the keys so that it matches with Anki's buttons. I've set mine up with both my Windows PC and MacBook - for Windows, I use JoyToKey, and for MacBook I use Karabiner. There are videos on YouTube that show you how to set them up step-by-step.

The most annoying part about the remapping process, at least for me, was figuring out which buttons on the controller corresponded to which letter since you need to first insert this into the remapping program before you can assign it a different key/function. Luckily, there was a YouTube video that tells you but here is a list to make it even easier:

Start: o
Select: n
L: k
R: m
X: h
Y: i
A: g
B: j
Up button: c
Down button: d
Left button: e
Right button: f

I've been using this for the past 8 months now, and couldn't be happier!

PROS:
- Easy to use, at least once you've set it up once.
- Small, fits in hand comfortably.
- I can stand and do Anki!
- Charges last forever!! I seriously think I've only charged it like 3 times in the past 8 months. I heard it takes a long time to actually fully charge, so I just leave it plugged in overnight and after that, I don't have to worry about it for literally months.

CONS:
- As mentioned, the remapping process was tedious, but overall not too difficult if you follow the step-by-step instructions on YouTube.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you study with Anki, this is a must have
Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024
Small and portable, discreet, and can be customized for what you need. I use this for studying with ANKI, but it can be used for other purposes. It is great quality and feels solid in your hands. Mine always comes around with me and has taken a beating but holds up really well. Well worth the cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for students reviewing flashcards! Just not the most intuitive configuration for all.
Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2022
Short take: Great device for reviewing flashcards for students, despite setup and configuration not being the most intuitive. Easily beats out more expensive competition if price is any component of your decision because what you get for the price just can't be beat.

Thoughts and criticisms:

I bought this to use as a remote for reviewing my flashcards for medical school (we're talking thousands, typically with hundreds per day) and I use it primarily with Anki. Sometimes I switch between using my computer app and my phone all (cast to my TV). It may not be explicit to all, but you need to press a different button to connect it to different systems (Windows v Apple v Android, etc). If you threw away your instructions and forgot, you can look on the back for a reminder if you plan to switch what type of system you use this device with. I feel this product is well worth the price, but this information wasn't intuitive for all users - as I had to support one of my colleagues in learning how to switch this info.

Mapping the buttons could be made easier. It isn't explicitly stated which buttons on the device correspond with what input when assigning keys. That being said, if you look carefully in whatever program you are using to assign keys, if you press the key on the physical device, you should see the corresponding assignment light up and you can write these down. It would be useful to have information come with the device on this process.

On android use:
I've noticed most of my classmates that had something similar had iPhone/Mac and could download a program to map the buttons, but this option is not available on windows or android and you have to use something different. For windows, I downloaded JoyToKey. There are other options, but many of them have a learning curve to comprehend how to map out the keys and this wasn't worth the time for me.

Certainly would buy this device again and will be recommending it to new students. Just would love if the developer made the instructions more clear.

1.0 out of 5 stars stopped working after 3 months

I got this for doing anki on my laptop. I have been good with it and liking the way it works but it’s a literal pain to set up on windows PC and it literally has stopped working now. It will not Bluetooth connect it is broken and now I don’t have a remote to use. It’s so upsetting and I was really excited about the product and I’m so disappointed in it now . Hope that they will revamp the remote. I have to reset it multiple times and it just will not connect it comes up with different names on the laptop. Absolute worst! Don’t get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, it's for Anki.

Just as described. Battery life not bad, but it will run out if you're doing Anki for hours on end.

3.0 out of 5 stars The D-pad is kinda terrible…
Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2024
I really liked the concept of this controller and it definitely has its perks. However….The D-pad really needs work! Lots of mistaken diagonal presses. The buttons themselves feel pretty mushy and with quite a bit of travel. On the actual button side that’s not too bad of an issue. In a 3D game where all directions need to be used with some precision the D pad is pretty much unusable. So no tony hawk or crash bandicoot…… ;(
