5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible hidden gem!

How did I not know about this game until now? If you enjoy adventure games with the heavy emphasis on story and emotional character building, this is an incredible journey. It has just enough action and puzzling to keep you busy, but more than enough story to allow you to connect with the character on a deep level.

It’s hard to explain. It follows a character who suffers from severe mental illness, and it helps you see through her eyes how she experiences life - without shoving it on you or trying to guilt trip you. I didn’t feel like I was being forced to learn about her condition, I was just along for the ride. It’s a very interesting way to approach the subject matter and it was quite exciting,

Albeit, at a little stressful at times. This is exactly how the developers wanted the game to be. They want you to feel that sense of anxiety along with the character, and they do that very well!

It may not be an incredibly long game but it was an incredibly beautiful and satisfying one. I appreciated this experience and I hope more people play it.

My only gripe at this point is that it was a tiny bit glitchy on the PS5 but I got through. Sometimes the graphics would stutter a bit or get pixelated. This isn’t the devs intention.

I only wish the sequel would be available on PlayStation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A premature review...

I'm about a third of the way through this, so if it ends up being very disappointing, I'll change the review. But, so far, I am loving the game. I am playing this concurrently with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. While Tomb Raider is also excellent, it is the typical AAA game with an icon-stuffed map, constant reminders about button prompts, skill tree upgrades, fast travel points, online connectivity for scoreboards, scads of DLC...ugh. I love Tomb Raider. But it is very, very representative of AAA bloat.

Switching to Hellblade is a wonderful shock to the system. There are no tutorials. There are no action prompts. There is no map and pretty much no collectibles. There is no skill tree. From what I can tell, you get one weapon for the entire game. There are maybe 2 sentences near the start that outline the terms of the game (in short: die too many times, and start again at the beginning). This is such a pared down game that it almost feels too simple. But the graphics are great, the voices and acting are spot on, and the atmosphere is impeccably rendered. The combat is simple but tight and is not integrated into exploration like in God of War...here you are solving environmental puzzles or fighting in closed off arenas and that is it.

If you feel like you need a break from 50-100 hour open world games that aim to tick every box, and you can't muster doing another side quest to earn yet another skill point to go one box further in yet another skill tree, and if you are tired of making "choices" in games to affect the "narrative" (but really, you never do), and if you just don't want to start at another gargantuan map dotted with too many things, Hellblade is the stripped down, narrative driven, cinematic shock to the system that every jaded 3rd person action gamer needs.

For $20, it would be a crime to miss this wonderfully constructed game.

Very interesting game, it explores the nuances of mental disorders in a pretty immersive way. The most unique approach to a game I've seen in a long time.
This charger is the best, because I'm always on the go.

I had never played a game that made me want to know what's really in the woods, and what's next.

We need to keep physical media alive, one game at a time.
This is a must to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! I never want to stop playing!

The game is absolutely amazing and portrays the mental health issues tastefully and accurately. The combat system is so immersive and realistic (a refreshing change from the norm), and learning about Norse mythology along the way keeps you involved and interested. The graphics and audio design are incredibly detailed and haunting, and I often replay the game just to see the environments again. I applaud the developers for taking the time, effort, and care to do the research and collaborate with experts as well as those who have personal experience. It's so relieving to see a game work with serious mental health topics with the aim to understand instead of demonizing or trivializing them. I also appreciate that the developers gave the game a real ending befitting the mental battle waged throughout the story.
