5.0 out of 5 stars Great game, not great graphics

Wonderful game with great monsters and interesting story. The graphics are pretty simple with lots of draw distance issues and graphics pop-in. Load times are okay, but not super fast. Lots of switching between areas causes a lull in the action. The gameplay is a lot of rinse and repeat, which is fine if you enjoy that. If you are coming from Dragon Quest 11, you might find the graphics and level layouts surprisingly worse than you would like.

I love the Dragon Quest series, and this latest incarnation of Monsters is no exception. It’s a nice mix of challenging but not frustrating, can play for half an hour or all night, and as always, the monsters are a nice mix of cute, fierce, silly, and badass. Now that Psario has made his debut, I really hope Square Enix brings the Zenithian trilogy (DQ 4-5-6) to Switch next.

Whether you’ve played them all or it’s your first time with the series, this installment of Dragon Quest Monsters is sure to impress. A must have for JRPG and pocket monster training games!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, Still Gets Patches, DLC is Dumb
Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2024
The game itself is REALLY fun! I'm definitely glad that they decided to localize another Monsters title after a decade of unlocalized Monsters titles. Hopefully this game does well enough to warrant more localizations in the future.

The performance of the game can use some work. It beats Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (obviously), but it can still use some improvements here and there as some frames do skip and other areas with a ton of particle effects do chug at times. I'd say it's more comparable to Legends Arceus as the framerate is like mid 20s with heavier areas getting closer to 15-20. The devs are continuously supporting the game with useful patches (one improved QoL features and nerfed Stun spells [that was the meta for a while as everyone online was running monsters that frequently stunned]), so they actually care about the product after launch, however.

You don't need to play DQ4 ahead of time to be able to play this game, but there are some nice callbacks here and there for those who did.

Overall, it's a fun game that anyone can get into. It actually has some tough spots to it, so it's great for those who want to have a decent challenge at the game without it being too brutal (though a couple of bosses are essentially skill checks that require you to have a good team composition and/or strategy to beat).

Day 1 DLC for baked-in features from the 3DS titles knocks this down a star, however.

So I’ve been an RPG lover ever since the early 90’s before I even knew what they were called. My first ones were things like Earthbound Mother 2, Super Mario RPG, and Chrono Trigger. Later Final Fantasy VII, and IX. I didn’t hear about Dragon Quest over in the west til years later and once I did I see what I was missing out on. Dragon Quest Monsters is a series I never played til now. I’m glad I got it as it made me get into Dragon Quest IV because of the older ones it’s the only one I haven’t touched yet. This is a great monster catching game. DQ helped to introduce this mechanic long before Pokémon came out. And just a bit after the older Shin Magami Tensei games. Dragon Quest was the first ever console RPG back on the NES which influenced Final Fantasy and the older Shin Magami Tensei games. I’m glad and honored to play it and DQ is one of my most favorite series. Thank you very much! I’m looking forward to Dragon Quest 3 Remake and DQ XII!
