Ok let's be honest, I seriously bought this for my kids.... BUT I won't let them play, it's so stupid and fun!! You can literally just cruise around for hours playing on your skateboard, you can follow the questlines or you could be a real "skater" ;) and just screw around because NO one tells you what to do!! Because you'll just smack them with your skateboard. It's hilarious. I come home from a stressful day at work and just sit down and play this game completely mindlessly, it's beautiful.
In all seriousness though my kids LOVE this. They're 10 and 12 and figured out the controls fairly quickly. It has a good tutorial at the beginning. They're favorite thing to do is just customize their character forever. It'd be more fun if it was two player on the same screen, it's only multiplayer over the xbox online stuff. Taking turns is "not their thing" apparently.
Character creation is fun, there are lots of options. You can be anyone you wanna be, or a horrible looking beast of a person, whatever floats your boat lol. Because we all wanna be a middle aged man, with a wife beater screwing around on a board all day. We all wanna be Bob. ^_^
