5.0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air

This is the eleventh title in the series. By this point, you know if you're a fan or not. So I'll go into this review assuming people considering this are at least somewhat familiar with the series up to this point. To kick things off, you start out the game as an adult for a change. And I don't mean a "freshly graduated" teenager who can somehow go toe-to-toe with legends by the age of 18, or a high-schooler with similar skill. I'm talking mid-20s guy with some life experience under his belt. As an adult, it's nice to play this style of game as an actual adult for a change. Even if some of the supporting cast still falls into previously mentioned tropes. You still get a lot of the slice of life moments and assignments that help you get to know the locals and teammates that the series is known for, but you're doing so as someone it feels a little more plausible to have his skillset by his age. The story also follows a somewhat more mature vibe. While the series has always featured death, war, and loss, this game actually depicts murders. Not just perceived deaths where characters mysteriously come back later only slightly injured. But medics carting hours cold bodies to the morgue, and there's no way they're coming back murders. Which gives the game a more noir detective story vibe at times. In some ways, I felt it had similar vibes to the Yakuza games at times, though not the more ridiculous moments. I will stress this though, the game is VERY dialog heavy. Even moreso than previous titles. I love games like this, but it will not be for everyone.

I have mixed feelings about combat. There's options for direct action oriented combat reminiscent of previous Falcom games like Ys and Tokyo Xanadu, and turn-based combat that's kind of a cross between previous games and Arc the Lad Twighlight of Spirits in how you can move freely within your area to set up where you'll attack from. It's entirely optional, and the game does a good job of explaining this option with the use of in-game technology. But at times it almost simplifies combat too much. There's no real need to strategize where your attack will leave you on the field, because you can move yourself to where it won't matter. It's still fun. And it feels more streamlined, but it does come at the cost of some of the strategies previous games offered. And the action choice helps clear out lower leveled enemies quickly while not being boring.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed my time with this. It just might be my new favorite game in the series. Especially after Reverie was kind of a snoozer by comparison. But I think I had just gotten burned out on that cast and story arc after hundreds of hours with them. And Reverie didn't offer anything we hadn't already experienced previously. Daybreak does a great job of offering enough familiarity to appease fans, while doing enough things different to keep us invested. I'm definitely excited for the sequel to make it out West finally next year!

The graphics look pretty good and I being a full on rookie to this series and just
now starting out, this'll be a brand new experience.

Deluxe edition is far from deluxe, it's a switch game... that's all everything else is digital download so buyer beware. There's no fancy box, artwork book or package in music.

I'm not sure what was wrong with one of the other reviewer's order but the mini artbook and the digital soundtrack code are inside the case along with the game. So what you get is what you see in the picture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depends on your level of "fan".

Visually looks impressive on the Switch. Keep in mind that this game is YEARS old, so manage your expectations. Given the limitations of the console, everything looks decently good and loads fairly well.

But as a game?

If you are a fan of the character aspect of the Cold Steel or Sky series, you will find this game basic and generic.

Cold Steel 1 did a fantastic job of making you care about the characters before throwing you into the bigger story.

Cold Steel 2 expanded on the war without sacrificing what made the characters compelling.

Cold Steel 3 and 4 basically focused way too much on the war and not enough on characters, with the exception of three of them.

Reverie was one of the worst experiences overall.

Daybreak freshens up the gameplay and goes a new direction with the story, but characters matter way less, and critically, the game eschews the common narrative that girls are eventually going to get attracted to the men they spend time with and treats everyone like a generic warrior. In one case, the game doesn't even bother with a declaration of gender.

This isn't to say it completely lacks fanservice; clearly, whoever developed the art was a fan of big chests on every female with one exception. But this is absolutely not Alisa/Rean. Go in expecting a generic experience like Tales of Arise, and chances are you'll really like this game.

Mini art book is underwhelming, but for the price I guess I should have expected that.
